High School Reunion Outfit Panic!

Apologies for not writing in so long. This thing called "work" took up a lot of my time over the last few weeks. Apparently, I need to be able to pay my "bills".

Fortunately, I have a new outfit dilemma for you dear readers, all three of you, to deliberate upon. My 20-year high school reunion is coming up in a few weeks, and of course, I need an outfit. But what should this outfit say? How can it sum up the last 20 years and convey what I need it to convey? Which is what exactly?

I need it to say:
  • I turned out normal, despite how weird I was in high school.
  • I'm moderately successful in a semi-creative field (as you can see my by use of accessories)
  • I have had a child, but I am not currently pregnant
  • I am (still trying to look) cool, just like back in high school
I've been thinking about a maxi dress or other forgiving silhouette, plus flat sandals and a great statement necklace. (I know, I know, I am SO predictable.)

Here are the contenders:

"It's an orange and brown sandwich," to quote myself.

{Late-breaking update}
  • #4 was eliminated from the competition because the Sundance Catalog wanted to charge me $17 to ship ONE dress. Suck it, Robert Redford.
  • #5 arrived this afternoon from Nordstrom and it's a delight! Cute and comfy! The belt helps define a waist, but the batwings still give you a little forgiving volume.
  • I also ordered #6, J. Crew's Summerstock Maxi Dress in "Smoldering Brick", also known as "Orange" where I come from. I've got high hopes for this baby.
So whaddya think? Which one do you vote for? Bear in mind the elaborate criteria (pudgy mom trying to look cool), and cast your vote!

UPDATE: I went with #5. It was bascially a big brown sack, and
while it may not have been figure-flattering, it did the trick. I see many weddings and funerals ahead for this dress.

Rolled Jeans

I've been rolling my jeans up lately, mainly because I get too hot thanks to my off-kilter hormones, not because I am trendy. Thanks hormones for making me accidentally fashionable!

I found this outfit, and I'm loving the rolled jeans and the colorful sandals. Looks cute, comfy, and seems like a perfect mom outfit.

Fellow mom and fashion fan Monika D answered my call to create comfy, good looking mom outfits for the blog and god bless her, she gave us some color! While I am allergic to color, (my house and wardrobe are black, white, grey and brown, it's a affliction) Monika embraces color, and infuses that sense of fun that my outfits lack.

Have a look:
White skirt + pink top + yellow purse + lime wallet + cute sandals + funky necklace

Jeans + green top + yellow jacket + red purse + turquoise necklace + cute flats

What I'm Wearing This Week

I'm feeling pretty good about a couple of outfits that I managed to put together this week, without looking too schlumpy.

White and grey tee + black jeans + green army jacket + sunglasses + (guess what?) flat brown sandals + giant brown purse + (guess what else?) gold hoops. Those last three are standard issue with me, and one can assume that any outfit of mine contains these items.

Also, I this one, not too shabby, if I say so myself...

Stylish Mom Outfits and the Holy Grail. Neither can be found.

I recently left my full-time job to spend some time with my son, work part time and pursue my creativity (see: this blog and some other stuff).

I had a closet full of career wear, which in my case meant a lot of black trousers, semi-artsy tops and statement necklaces to keep the eyes on my face and off my hips. I had a smaller population of casual clothes, and some loungewear. An item of clothing qualified as loungewear if it was not decent enough in coverage or quality to be worn outside of the house, the only exception being if the house was on fire.

So with a change in lifestyle comes a change in wardrobe, right? Except that I didn't know what to wear. I would be spending a lot of time at home, at the park with my son, and doing mom-stuff like grocery shopping and dishes. Sounds like fun, huh?

My goal was modest and my standards were low. I wanted to just look OK, not a "shlumpadinka" and not one of those supermodel moms, impossibly thin with expensive jeans. I wanted to convey a sense of style that said "I might be a mom, but I'm still trying to look cool. Is it working?", but also be comfortable enough to run at the park or bend over to get the dry clothes out of the dryer. Give me "good enough", and I'd be fine.

So imagine my horror when I discovered this terrible truth. There are no stylish and cheap clothes for moms, especially ones for "robust" figures. The fashion industry assumes that every mom wants cropped cargo pants and floral printed tee shirts. Believe me, I have done the legwork, and the staggering lack of variety is, well, staggering.

So one of the goals of this blog is to find the penultimate mom outfit, which must have these attributes:
  • inexpensive, because its going to get something spilled on it
  • stylish, because I want to think I might still have it
  • decent quality, because even though something is going to get spilled on it, I'll probably wear it with the stain anyway. I need my stained shirt to last.
  • plenty of stretch, because I have never bent down so much since becoming a mother.
  • comfortable footwear, because my feet still think we're pregnant.
So there you have it. Are you up for the challenge? Can you suggest a good looking mom outfit that fits this criteria? Create an outfit on ShopStyle.com and post the link in comments. I'll post my ideas throughout this blog, so keep coming back for Mom Outfits.
