Guest dresser: Monika D

Fellow mom and fashion fan Monika D answered my call to create comfy, good looking mom outfits for the blog and god bless her, she gave us some color! While I am allergic to color, (my house and wardrobe are black, white, grey and brown, it's a affliction) Monika embraces color, and infuses that sense of fun that my outfits lack.

What to wear?

If you are like me, you enjoy fashion but sometimes dread getting dressed every morning because it's a lot of effort, you always want to sleep until the last possible second, and creativity is so darn hard early in the morning.

While flipping through a fashion magazine one day, it occurred to me - I could do that. I think I said, "Hey, I have a blue top like that and black jeans, but I never thought of putting them together THAT way." So I started putting together "outfit recipes" by taking spreads from fashion mags and recreating them with the items I already had in my closet.

My first version was low-tech: a binder with torn magazine pages stuffed into page protector sheets, and a handwritten list of outfits I'd put together and liked. Then I got really fancy and organized the outfits into categories: Work, Casual, and Party. The binder sat by my bed, I consulted it regularly and every season I would update and edit it.

Then the internet came along and sites like Polyvore, ShopStyle and Pinterest popped up, alongside regular online retailers, and fashion blogs like the Sartorialist. Suddenly, great fashion from the street and from the runway could be seen, collected and organized in a way never done before. Needless to say, I was hooked.

Outfit + Recipes is an attempt to put my dusty old binder up on the internet for much the same reason I created it in the first place - to collect good outfit ideas from many sources, to serve as inspiration for getting dressed, and to make mornings a little easier.
